for what its worth

You’ll have guessed that my food blogging as well as documenting my desire to enjoy cooking a bit more has been a substitute for having to say something about the state of the Labour Party at the moment.

As with comedy, timing is critical in politics. And at the moment some of ours seems pretty dreadful.
There is an abyss and we seem intent on on playing chicken on the edge. Tempting though it is to see the present meltdown as temporary* I suspect it isn’t. Tempting as it is to think all we need to do is play musical chairs (with Tony loosing out) I am sceptical that’ll heal the wounds.

The tension that I feel between the need for a level of disipline (’cause we know what happens to parties that can’t manage that) and the equally urgent need for open debate about values and policy is something many members of the party must be struggling with.

What I fear is that we won’t manage either; and that won’t serve us, or those we serve, well.

* By which I mean over in a week or two.

Re timing were you referring to the item “Social Exclusion – Join The Debate” immediately below Tony Blair’s statement that is on the Labour website?
