Young people to hand out £360,000 to projects for young people

I’ve had the following via Steve, which I thought worth passing on:

Young people in Lewisham have been given an extraordinary opportunity to set up projects for other young people, giving them things to do, places to go and people to talk to.

Thanks to the Labour Government’s Youth Opportunity Fund and Youth Capital Fund, £360 000 will be available for Lewisham youngsters. A team of 15 Young Commissioners have been trained to handle applications and hand out cash. The Young Commissioners have developed an application form for young people to complete outlining their ideas, which might include projects like:

  • youth club refurbishment,
  • buying new equipment or creating ICT areas for young people; and
  • schemes such as residential courses or activity programmes.

Every application should be supported by a youth work organisation (youth club, sports club etc), but if a young person applies on their own a suitable supporting organisation will be found.

If you know anybody who is interested, they can download an application form from binvolved or by calling 020 8314 9543 or writing to The Young Commissioners, The Oakridge Centre, 5 Oakridge Road, Downham, Bromley, BR1 5QW.

Applications will be assessed by the Young Commissioners who will then pass them to the Young Mayor and Young Advisors before an announcement is made about which ideas they plan to fund.

Get your thinking caps on!
