Fact of the evening

FaradayThis evening I’ve been at the inaugural lecture given by my brother in law at Queen Mary’s college.  Miles was talking about the dissemination of knowledge to create change (or at least I think he was) and illustrating his thesis with some very good examples.

One of which was about how the modern prison system came into being.  The thing that caught my attention was his slide showing how Michael Faraday had spent some of his time designing prison walls so that they didn’t carry sound.

The idea being that solitary contemplation was redemptive.

About Andrew Brown
