Deptford Marbles

Deptford Marbles

At the last meeting I had with Streetleaders, when I was Cabinet Member for the Environment on Lewisham Council, we talked about improving a small corner of Deptford.

The taggers had been at work covering the mural and shop shutters and there was a sense that the public space had become unloved.

Walking past there yesterday morning it was great to see the improvements, most notably another piece of public art from the ubiquitous Artmongers.

About Andrew Brown

I live in Lewisham, South East London, and spent 9 years as a Labour councillor in the borough between 1997 and 2006.

Thats groovy, Im not one for modern art but quite like that. Beats those blue tubey things in Catford.

  2. Andrew Brown says:

I quite like the blue tube things myself.

  3. richard says:

Another vote for the blue tubey things here!

I had to see the bigger photo before I realised those monoliths are only 2D. I suppose that’s quite impressive!

  4. Knit Nurse says:

I noticed this a couple of weeks back and to my shame, didn’t know how long it had been there! I know it was slated for the festival earlier in 2007 but never materialised, I assumed because funding had evaporated. I think it’s great – must get down to Catford and see these blue tubey things…..

  5. Ross says:

those blue tube things in catford cost 30 grand and they look like a heap of sh*te

    money well spent, hmm…

  6. kate says:

Ross i really like that you have started a blog to save Catford but why are you so angry all the time? My kids like the blue tubey things its ok but not what i class as art.

  7. Ross says:

plenty to be angry about i suppose kate

the modern day consensus of political ‘end of history’ liberals seems to be either ignorant of or pretend not to see the vast ruptures in society and the multiple & varied manifestations in every day life that stem from that, or to put these manifestations down to isolated non structural reasons, pretend that everything’s alright and over time reproduce that outlook within society

if refusing to take such a position gets me classed as angry then i’m happy to take that, being the opposite of angry (whatever that is) in this area won’t change anything

i am however a very nice person and not in the slightest an angry person on a personal level šŸ™‚

(re the blue tubey things, i’m indifferent to them as art, just when you see money being spent lilke this you can’t help wondering how much more beneficial things it could be put to – a years CAB advisor’s salary for example, and don’t get me started on the half a million pounds spent putting a fake lake through the middle of ladywell park!)
