Petition on Burma.

Free Aung San Suu KyiI’ve been reading a book on how youth movements in parts of the Eastern Europe helped overthrow the repressive regimes in the post Soviet era. I’ve been struck by how similar the experiences there were with what seems to be happening in Burma now.

The commitment to non-violence, the use of colour, the numbers of people on the street, and the brutality of the crackdown by the authorities.

While knowing that it can’t make a significant difference I’d still like you to consider joining me in signing the petition to ask the Prime Minister continue his personal engagement on Burma.

You might also want to send an email to the President of the EU to see if pressure can be applied there.

If you are on Facebook join the group and consider going on the march this Sunday.

Here’s a report from the BBC that gives some context:

Update: Here’s the Prime Minister’s statement on Burma.

International Bloggers’ Day for Burma on the 4th of October

International bloggers are preparing an action to support the peaceful revolution in Burma. We want to set a sign for freedom and show our sympathy for these people who are fighting their cruel regime without weapons. These Bloggers are planning to refrain from posting to their blogs on October 4 and just put up one Banner then, underlined with the words „Free Burma!“.

I hope there will be, but what it is I don’t know yet. I hope that making sure our support is as visible as possible and spreading the word helps a bit.
