The News Shopper bring us news of the latest anarchist action in Lewisham; although I think they’re being a little coy when they say they’re “a pressure group which supports local campaigns”.
The Solidarity Federation website is a bit more explicit about their aims:
The interests of the working class lie in the destruction of capitalist society.
Now that’s more like it!
What kind of self-respecting anarchist worries about the fate of the Post Office – a large cog in the capitalist system?
ANARCHIST TAXONOMY
Strictly speaking the banner is a variation on the anarcho-syndicalist design Andrew – influences like Durutti in Spain and the American Industrial Workers of the World. Anarchist yes but Industrial Anarchist is probably the sub catagory. You could say its the Anarchist version of traditional values in a modern setting 🙂
You’re right of course, John, but whether the tag of anarcho-syndicalism really helps our understanding of their interest in post offices I’m not too sure.
Looking at their website there’s a fair amount of confront the bosses, support the workers, don’t get bogged down in bourgeois industrial democracy rhetoric. Less on why post offices – as they’re currently organised – are less odious than post offices in WH Smiths.
Agreed Andrew.
In my days of libertarian leftyness the biggest accusation levelled at Anarchos was no analysis combined with unthinking romantic workerism. Infact, I wouldn’t mind betting they haven’t really worked out their own interest in post offices beyond a populist stance to get some ‘face time’ with the public.
Maybe they’re just concerned to make sure the queens head remains on the stamps 🙂
